The mission of the IGU Commission on Landscape Analysis and Landscape Planning is to disseminate knowledge and expertise and foster collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including geographers, planners, decision-makers, and landowners. This collaboration aims to advance the understanding and implementation of landscape analysis and planning methodologies to create functional, and resilient landscapes across diverse socio-economic and political contexts.
The Commission aims to support landscape analysis that involves (i) integrated assessment of the natural and cultural components of a landscape; (ii) GIS analysis of spatial landscape data; and (iii) exploring land use and cultural practices that shape the landscape across diverse socio-economic and political contexts.
The Commission focuses on integrating knowledge and expertise related to landscape planning to support practices that sustain natural resources, maintain biodiversity, and preserve the social and cultural values of landscapes along the urban-rural gradient across diverse socio-economic and political contexts.
Building partnerships with academic institutions, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private sector to promote collaborative efforts in landscape analysis and landscape planning.
Disseminate knowledge and expertise on landscapes as integrated socio-ecological systems, recognising the interdependence between human activities and natural processes, and promoting sustainable landscape management practices and governance solutions that balance ecological, social, and economic considerations.
Promoting the use of advanced tools, models, and technologies for landscape analysis and landscape planning.
Conducting awareness campaigns to educate the public about the importance of landscape planning and the role they can play in creating sustainable landscapes.
